I had this background finished a couple of months ago, and I knew I wanted to make it a "Mad Hatter" (now also know as "Cuckoo Hatter") page. But my previous try at a Mad Hatter wasn't great. So I procrastinated for a while :)
This is the previous Hatter that I made. The result is a super creepy grey face that I didn't like at all. I just made this picture and I hadn't seen it for a while. I still really hate the face. I like the coloring though. especially the leathery look on the jacket. Luckily this time I'm quite happy with my Cuckoo Hatter".
So it started with this very busy page in a rainbow of acrylic colors over newsprint tissue paper. Trying to see how the build up is I'm guessing I started with glueing the tissue paper down mostly on the edges. Then added a layer of yellow and magenta acrylic. The next layer was green and light blue and a third layer of turquoise that I applied and while the paint was wet wiped some paint off through a stencil of squares. To tome everything down I added a layer of white gesso. To finish the background I added white and purple splashes.
I drew the Cuckoo Hatter and colored him with Copics. (Of course I forgot to take pictures before glueing him down. To add something on the other page I also drew a series of thread bobbins and rainbow colored them with copics.
Finally to finish everything off I added an outline of Cheshire Cat, some shading and a border with pink and blue metallic paint markers. The page number and date stamp are the last things I add.
